Introduction

The role of a concession General Manager (GM) is pivotal to the overall success of both the PFI concession company and its partnering public authority. In healthcare, this success is measured in a variety of ways. The workload of the concession GM can be substantial. The GM can have responsibility for the delivery of all non-clinical services to the site. This involves managing the facilities management service delivery from subcontractors, controlling the interface between the service providers and the health authority, and ensuring that all matters are undertaken following proper health and safety, risk management and control of infections guidelines.

As the senior company concession manager on site, the GM is also required to act as media manager, liaison for other public authorities and contact point for all other stakeholders of the PFI contract. The GM is also responsible for the management of a business with a substantial operating budget.

The management of the concession business requires GM involvement at both strategic and detailed levels. To achieve this the support of a strong, experienced and dedicated team is essential.
