Consort has incorporated a number of technology-based systems including a pneumatic tube system to reduce on site transportation, and computerised stock controls. It was also proposed to introduce Automated Guided Vehicles, which are self propelled, battery operated, computer controlled vehicles which automatically pick up and transport trolleys within the new hospital.
The advantages of the automated trolley system are lower operating costs with a system which can operated 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The system has already been running successfully in many other hospital across the world and has shown an overall reduction in damage to the building.
The introduction of technology raises sensitive issues particularly concerning resilience, reliability and staff issues.
Consort proposes to introduce this technology in phases, enabling efficiency across a number of services to be gained throughout the project life.
Consort has proposed a partial introduction of the automated system after a period of settling into the new facilities. This gradual and phased introduction will allow the sensitive staff issues to be addressed. The introduction of the automated trolleys will release staff from performing the physically arduous task of pushing bulk trolleys around the hospital.
