To create an original sculpture using a tree from the hospital grounds which during the construction phase had become diseased and had needed to been felled. As Consort is committed to maintaining the natural aesthetics of the hospital grounds, Colin Wilbourn, a renowned local artist was commissioned to create a sculpture from the tree which visitors to the hospital would be able to enjoy.
Using the entire trunk of the tree, the 'You and Me both' piece was carved with a heart pierced by an arrow at one end, carvings of woodcarving tools and a carved hat. At the other end of the trunk is a carved rustic seat designed to face a recently planted sapling. The piece represents the death of the tree, but in doing so carries a theme of re-birth, depicting the range of uses a mature tree can provide throughout its existence.
As well as ensuring that the natural grounds of the hospital are maintained, the 'You and Me Both' sculpture now provides a place to be enjoyed by visitors and patients, and also a bench where many hospital staff now enjoy some fresh air whilst having lunch.
The 'You and Me Both' sculpture is part of a family of sculptures which Consort Healthcare have commissioned for the hospital grounds. Other sculptures can be found in the hospital courtyards, demonstrating a long term investment in arts for the hospital.
The 'You and Me Both' sculpture was funded by Consort Healthcare as an addition to a wider artwork programme.
